The inclusion of torpedoes on these ships was in recognition of their designed role as destroyer squadron leaders, as well as to give them extra punching power that their 5” main batteries lacked.īy the time of WWII (which is the configuration you see of Texas in game), nations had almost universally moved away from torpedoes on battleships. Ships from the Portland-class onward were not designed with torpedoes, with the exception of the Atlanta-class. The US also removed torpedoes from all existing cruisers by 1941 apart from the Omaha-class (although some of their tubes were removed to reduce weight and improve seakeeping). Nelson was almost lost to an Italian air-dropped torpedo after a hit flooded one of her torpedo rooms as well. Lutzow was lost at Jutland after hits below the waterline flooded her large forward torpedo room. Torpedo rooms in the bowels of the ship needed to be quite large and could not be subdivided. The US Navy removed the fixed torpedo tubes from all their BBs at various points between the two World Wars. Not only where they highly situational weapons, but their inclusion introduced unnecessary vulnerabilities, both by necessitating a gap in protection (either armor or torpedo defense systems) and compromising the internal subdivision (anti-flooding measures) of the ships.
